Multisensory Interiors. Comfort and Regeneration in the Reuse of Spaces
The proposed topic aims to explore a multisensory approach to the reuse of abandoned architecture and the interior and spatial design. Our relationship with the built and natural landscape not only consists of visual contemplation, but simultaneously involves all other perceptive modalities. Inter-corporeality and the connection with places assume a founding value for our personality: being embodied beings, minds, bodies, environment and culture are connected to each other at different levels. Cross-modal correspondences are the key to effective multisensory design. When the different senses perceive coherent stimuli, the brain automatically associates and processes them more smoothly, making users experience a mental state associated with aesthetics and comfort. A transdisciplinary confluence of behavioral neuroscience, environmental psychology, interior architecture, and spatial design can provide an effective response to the widespread request for an organism-centered design process, the demand for places that foster physical, psychological, emotional, and social well-being, and the need to address the climate crisis in a sustainable way for the planet and for humans.
Themes to be covered can be, but are not limited to, the following topics:
- Reuse and regenerative beauty
- Multisensory installations
- Biophilia in interior design
- Fascination with abandoned spaces
- Individual well-being and reinvention of built assets
- Spatial perception and the contribution of neuroscience
