{"id":5164,"date":"2012-05-01T01:07:15","date_gmt":"2012-04-30T23:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/padjournal.net\/?p=23"},"modified":"2022-04-13T17:34:09","modified_gmt":"2022-04-13T15:34:09","slug":"a-soap-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.padjournal.net\/new\/a-soap-story\/","title":{"rendered":"A soap story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--:ca--><br \/>\n<!--:--><!--:en--><strong>The background of the Story<\/strong><br \/>\nThe soap story, K\u00f6p\u00fck\u00f6p\u00fck (Bubble Bubble), is the practical research of a master thesis. It is a thesis which is rooted from discourses such as \u2018sustainable localization\u2019, \u2018slow living\u2019, \u2018management of community power\u2019 etc. It is a thesis that aims to support the idea that women are a major group critically important to achieving sustainable development.<br \/>\nWith this background, in Turkey, 2011, an experimental design project is held between a local women community and a design researcher with the motivation of supporting women\u2019s production by consulting strategic \/ communication design for the creation of more sustainable product\/service solutions while creating a new operational area for the designer.<br \/>\n<strong> How the Story Began<\/strong><br \/>\nThe story has begun with the field trip to Cittaslow Seferihisar in search of a community for a collaborative design project. The reason why this county is particularly selected for such research is that, with the subscription to Cittaslow Network, in a short while the local government and community engaged to act for the change towards sustainability, the slow philosophy has been highly internalized by the citizens and especially local women are encouraged to participate in local bazaars as producers with items of domestic production such as local homemade food products and handcrafts for the benefit of their social equity and local economy as well (Figure 1).<br \/>\nHowever, the research outcomes exposed a gap in the existing situation; while some women producers had strong product concepts that were offering sustainable product solutions such as non-toxic cotton villager baby dolls or objects\/accessories made out of re-used materials, a major part of the women that were producing ordinary knitting and sewing-works were lacking product innovation to offer sustainable and profitable solutions. Following this outcome, an agreement for a design collaboration has been done with Ulam\u0131\u015f Woman Labor House as a facility where women come together to produce and improve their skills and can benefit from such design collaboration.<br \/>\n<strong>The Story<\/strong><br \/>\nK\u00f6p\u00fck\u00f6p\u00fck is a product-service system design idea, created during the workshops held with Ulam\u0131\u015f Woman Labor House with the aim of finding innovative product\/service ideas that are sustainable and profitable. Briefly, the idea aims at diffusing the use of local liquid olive oil soap that will be produced by the local women and consumed by the local community in public places such as schools, government buildings etc. The main objectives of the proposed idea are;<br \/>\n\u2022 Empowering the local women community for sustainable local production.<br \/>\n\u2022 Using local olive oil resources efficiently for local needs.<br \/>\n\u2022 Creating awareness against the harmful effects of mainstream cleaning products in the society.<br \/>\n<strong>The Process<\/strong><br \/>\nTo reach the idea K\u00f6p\u00fck\u00f6p\u00fck, five workshops have been held with the woman labor house (Figure 2). The first meeting, Workshop 0, has been a step for the integration to the community. With this aim, the meeting has been held with a sincere attitude that even the religious ceremony that they repeat on Fridays has been participated. Later, the abilities and capabilities of the women for production have been discussed, it is discovered that a workshop for the production of natural olive oil soap has already been held by the government. Accordingly, natural olive oil soap with its strong link to sustainability and its relation to local resources has been decided as the product to be worked on.<br \/>\nThe next two workshops have been held for the development of product concepts. At this stage, product concepts have been generated by sharing ideas and the most promising four concepts have been visualized by the designer (Figure 3). The details of the product concepts and their evaluation regarding social and environmental sustainability concerns can be found in Figure 4.<br \/>\nAfter the decision for the final product concept, the last two workshops have been held for the experimentation of the product.<br \/>\n<strong>The Design Plan<\/strong><br \/>\nFirstly, the product that is offered in K\u00f6p\u00fck\u00f6p\u00fck product-service system is the liquefied version of natural olive oil soap (Figure 5). The motivation to liquefy the product is the common use of liquid soap in public areas. The technique being used for the liquefaction is that the solid soaps which are produced by women beforehand are being grinded, water is being added and the mixture is being left for homogenization for a night.<br \/>\nTo continue with the consumption scenario, the product reaches the user in the lavatories of public area and the soap dispenser is the medium to deliver the message of the project (Figure 6). The stickers on dispensers are used to highlight the labor of local women and the need for the use of non-toxic cleaning alternatives. Here, an alternative design for the soap dispenser has not been developed with the aim of proposing a more feasible solution to the local government.<br \/>\nAs the story is a product-service idea, inside the content of the thesis, the design plan is constructed with the tools of product-system design, such as system map, interaction storyboard board and stakeholders motivation matrix. However, here only the interaction storyboard will be presented to depict the system in a horizontal timeline. In the storyboard, the roles of the actors for the implementation of the system are explained (Figure 7).<br \/>\nTo conclude, the story as an example of the collaborative design approach between a local women community and designer can create the background for a further study that focuses on the management of the local women community power. In that sense, such studies on the labour force of local women communities can be contributory for developing local economies especially in low in-come contexts where social equity has to be provided, while leading to generation of eco-efficient products\/service solutions to local problems.<br \/>\n<em>Eda K\u00d6SE, MDes, \u0130zmir University of Economics<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Asst. La tesi si basa sui concetti di &#8220;locale sostenibile&#8221;, &#8220;slow life&#8221;, &#8220;gestione del potere della comunit\u00e0&#8221;. La tesi sostiene l&#8217;idea che le donne rappresentano un gruppo decisivo nel raggiungimento dello sviluppo sostenibile.<\/p>\n<p>In questo quadro, in Turchia, nel 2011, ha avuto luogo un progetto sperimentale che coinvolge una comunit\u00e0 locale di donne \u00a0insieme ad un ricercatore di design con lo scopo di sostenere la produzione femminile attraverso la consultazione del design strategico e della comunicazione per la creazione di prodotti\/servizi sostenibili, parallelamente alla creazione di una nuova area operativa per il designer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Come \u00e8 iniziata la storia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>La storia ha inizio con il viaggio a Cittaslow Seferihisar e la ricerca di una comunit\u00e0 per il progetto di design collaborativo. Il motivo per cui Seferihisar \u00e8 particolarmente adatta a tale ricerca \u00e8 che, con la sottoscrizione al Network Cittaslow, il governo e la comunit\u00e0 locale si sono impegnati a operare per un cambiamento verso la sostenibilit\u00e0, e la filosofia slow \u00e8 stata interiorizzata dai cittadini e in particolare le donne del posto che sono state incoraggiate a partecipare ai bazar locali in qualit\u00e0 di artigiani con articoli di produzione locale, come ad esempio prodotti alimentari fatti in casa e di artigianato a beneficio della loro uguaglianza sociale cos\u00ec come all&#8217;economia locale (Figura 1).<\/p>\n<p>Comunque, i risultati della ricerca hanno rivelato un divario nell&#8217;attuale situazione; mentre alcune donne avevano idee di prodotti che offrivano soluzioni sostenibili, quali ad esempio vestagliette in tessuto &#8220;non tossico&#8221; oppure altri oggetti e accessori ricavati da materiali di riciclo, una gran parte di donne producevano lavori a maglia o di sartoria che mancavano di quell\u2019innovazione che offre sostenibilit\u00e0 e soluzioni convenienti. Perseguendo un certo risultato, \u00e8 stato firmato un accordo di collaborazione con Ulam\u0131\u015f Woman Labor House, l&#8217;istituto che ha permesso che le donne potessero riunirsi per produrre e potenziare le proprie capacit\u00e0 e trarre beneficio dalla collaborazione con designer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La storia<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>K\u00f6p\u00fck\u00f6p\u00fck \u00e8 l&#8217;idea di un sistema di prodotti\/servizi, nata durante i workshop tenutisi con Ulam\u0131\u015f Woman Labor House con lo scopo difinire concept di prodotti\/servizi innovativi che siano sostenibili e redditizi. In sintesi, l&#8217;idea mira a diffondere l&#8217;uso del sapone all&#8217;olio di oliva locale che sar\u00e0 prodotto localmente dalle donne e consumato dalla comunit\u00e0 locale in luoghi pubblici, quali scuole, edifici amministrativi, etc. Gli obiettivi principali di tale proposta sono i seguenti:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Dare maggiore potere alla comunit\u00e0 delle donne locali per la produzione locale sostenibile.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Utilizzare le risorse di olio di oliva in maniera efficace per le esigenze locali.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Creare consapevolezza nella societ\u00e0 nei confronti degli effetti dannosi dei prodotti per la pulizia del grande circuito commerciale<\/p>\n<p><strong>Il Processo<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Per sviluppare l&#8217;idea di K\u00f6p\u00fck\u00f6p\u00fck, si sono tenuti 5 workshop con il laboratorio delle donne (Figure 2). Il primo meeting ha rappresentato un passo avanti verso l&#8217;integrazione con la comunit\u00e0. Con questo scopo, il meeting si \u00e8 svolto in un clima tranquillo e di sincerit\u00e0. In seguito, si \u00e8 discusso sulle abilit\u00e0 e le capacit\u00e0 di produzione delle donne; si \u00e8 scoperto in passato l\u2019amministrazione comunale aveva gi\u00e0 organizzato un workshop per la produzione del sapone all&#8217;olio d&#8217;oliva. Per questa ragione e per\u00a0la sua relazione con le risorse locali\u00a0e la sostenibilit\u00e0 intrinseca, il sapone naturale all&#8217;olio di oliva \u00e8 stato scelto come prodotto sul quale lavorare.<\/p>\n<p>I due successivi workshop si sono tenuti per lo sviluppo di idee di prodotto. In questa fase, i concept son state sviluppati grazie alla condivisione delle idee e le quattro pi\u00f9 promettenti sono state visionate dal designer (Figura 3). I dettagli dei prodotti e la loro valutazione in merito alla sostenibilit\u00e0 sociale ed ambientale si riscontrano nella Figura 4.<\/p>\n<p>Dopo aver definitivamente deciso la tipo di prodotto su cui lavorare, si sono svolti gli ultimi due workshop per la sperimentazione dello stesso.<\/p>\n<p><strong>La progettazione<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In primo luogo, il prodotto offerto nel sistema K\u00f6p\u00fck\u00f6p\u00fck \u00e8 la versione liquida del sapone all&#8217;olio di oliva (Figura 5). Il motivo per cui il sapone \u00e8 stato liquefatto \u00e8 legato al suo utilizzo nei luoghi pubblici. La tecnica usata per la liquefazione consiste nello sminuzzare il sapone precedentemente prodotto, aggiungere poi acqua e lasciare riposare il miscuglio per una notte.<\/p>\n<p>Per proseguire con lo &#8220;scenario del consumo&#8221;, il prodotto raggiunge il consumatore nei bagni pubblici e il distributore del sapone diventa il mezzo per comunicare il messaggio del progetto (Figura 6). Gli adesivi sui distributori vengono utilizzati per sottolineare l&#8217;operato delle donne locali e la necessit\u00e0 di utilizzare alternative atossiche per l\u2019igiene personale. Non \u00e8 stato sviluppato un nuovo design per il distributore del sapone al fine di proporre una soluzione pi\u00f9 facilmente realizzabile per l&#8217;amministrazione locale.<\/p>\n<p>Poich\u00e9 la storia presenta lo sviluppo di un prodotto\/servizio, per la progettazione sono stati utilizzati gli strumenti del design-product-service, quali ad esempio una system map, uno storyboard per l\u2019interazione e una matrice di motivazione degli stakeholder. Qui \u00e8 presentato soltanto lo storyboard dell&#8217;interazione che rappresentare il sistema su una linea temporale orizzontale. Nello storyboard sono spiegati i ruoli degli attori per l&#8217;implemento del sistema (Figura 7).<\/p>\n<p>In conclusione, la storia \u00e8 un esempio dell&#8217;approccio di design collaborativo tra una comunit\u00e0 locale di donne e un designer che pu\u00f2 costituire lo scenario per un ulteriore studio che si concentri sulla gestione del potere della comunit\u00e0 femminile locale.
